We’re in the Movies!

We are a hit of the big screen!

Filmmaker Cyndi Lenz produced an environmental short film with a heart, about a local beach cleanup group that started with a handful of people and has evolved into a significant contributor to the health of our local marine environment.

BREAKING NEWS!  Cyndi Lenz’ short documentary “The Garbage of Jupiter Beach” has been accepted in the 2011 Voices of Local Film at the Palm Beach International Film Festival.

Date: Sunday March 27, 2011
Time: Starting at 7:15 PM
Location: Muvico Parisian at CityPlace, West Palm Beach, Florida

Upon learning of FJB’s unique grassroots, volunteer-driven beach cleanup group, Cyndi dove into a project that highlights the problem of human impact (garbage) on Jupiter Beach and the marine ecosystem.  She was enamored with the story of how one woman, our founder Anita Lankler, embraced the ideas of a handful of visionaries and launched a 16-year old not-for- profit group that has removed more than 26,000 pounds of trash from a 2.5 mile stretch of the historic dog-friendly beach.

“The Garbage of Jupiter Beach” won first place in the Delray Beach Film Festival green short documentary category in March of 2010.  It has been accepted into several film festivals throughout the United States and received international interest.  After reviewing Cyndi’s film, the organizers of the Delray Beach Film Festival added a beach cleanup of their own to the lineup of activities!

While researching the garbage and marine environment angles for the film, Cyndi consulted with Loggerhead Marinelife Center staff in Juno Beach. Luckily, she visited the facility on the same day the sea turtles who had been stunned during the winter’s cold spell were released, and she included that remarkable footage in the film.

In fact, Cyndi has been named a Blue Friends Award finalist by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center for her efforts to promote marine conservation.

“My goal was not only to tell a wonderful local story, but to hopefully inspire others to join the Friends of Jupiter Beach effort or to be inspired to create their own group, to make a difference,” said Cyndi.

The film received top honors for  best documentary at the Mountain Film Festival at Mammoth, California.
